What is Self-Care? The basics.

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

When you first go to a therapist, the initial session is frequently about the therapist getting to know you. You see if you are comfortable with her and her style. She will ask you lots of questions about your lifestyle, your relationships, your family of origin, and your health history.

What does self-care look like? What is good self-care? Are you taking care of your self? Are you seeing your doctor on a regular basis? Are you getting your yearly exams?

One of my greatest concerns is most clients are not good at self-care. So let’s talk about what is good self-care? Start with the basics: are you doing your regular doctor maintenance, such as yearly exams, dental appointments, eye exams? are you getting enough sleep at night? How many meals do you eat a day and are they nutritious? Are you drinking enough water? Are you getting some form of exercise regularly? Do you spend some time outdoors enjoying nature? Are you spending time with your higher power (whatever that means to you)? These are just the basics and a good place to start. Next time I will talk about the next level of self-care, in the meantime see if any of these are lacking in your life and decide to do it differently.

You’re doing a great job just by reading this, just by being concerned about yourself and your self-care. It’s all about the small steps you take on a daily basis.
