I have found in my own experience that food is medicine. I have kept myself off many meds with the adjustment of my diet. And I use the word diet to reflect what I eat overall rather than how I reduce my food, which I don't believe works but that's for another blog. Last week I took a class on Nutritional Psychiatry which discussed how someone could at the minimum enhance their psychiatric medications and sometimes reduce them with the help of your doctor. I want to share with you some of the things I learned.
Many of the good brain chemicals begin in the gut. So good gut health leads to better brain health. And good gut health begins with a good probiotic. Purchase one with a higher number of probiotics between 15 million to 100 million with 10-30 different strains. Different strains support different needs. Research brands that have strains that support your needs. Studies have shown that a good probiotic will improve depression, IBS and immune disorders.
Consumption of sugars, processed carbs and sodas were at the top of the list of foods to moderate or eliminate for brain health. Try to eat much of your food unprocessed and fresh. They didn't recommend any specific diet and emphasized that it is an individual's choice based on their needs.
I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis last year and am able to keep it in remission by avoiding gluten and dairy. I am already a vegetarian so I eat pretty healthy. But it was nice to hear them say that if you have thyroid issues your first line of defense is to eliminate gluten (this is an area that needs to be precise, if you reduce gluten it will not help only total elimination will work, it did for me).
